Several ferry
connections are available between the Vancouver area Mainland and Vancouver
Island. Ferries depart regularly from Horseshoe Bay (just North of
Vancouver) and from Tsawwassen (just South of Vancouver) to Departure Bay
(Nanaimo) and to Swartz Bay (near Victoria). Reservations are recommended on
holiday weekends and during the summer months.

Once on Vancouver Island, it’s an easy drive on
Highway 19 to Buckley Bay where there are hourly departures to Denman and
Hornby Islands. From Highway 19 (the new INLAND Island Highway), take Exit
101 to Buckley Bay. A short connecting road brings you from the main highway
directly to the ferry terminal.
The Oceanside Route 19A (the Old Island Highway) is an alternative route
along the waterfront, which will also take you directly to Buckley Bay. If
you plan to enjoy this scenic route allow around 1/2 hour extra driving
time.
Travel times via the INLAND Island Highway 19:
Buckley Bay is 50 minutes north of Nanaimo.
Buckley Bay is 3 hours north of Victoria.
Buckley Bay is 20 minutes south of Courtenay (in the Comox Valley)
Buckley Bay is 30 minutes south of the Little River Ferry Terminal (connecting Powell River to Courtenay)
A ten-minute ferry crossing from Buckley Bay
brings you to Denman Island. A short drive across Denman brings you to
Gravelly Bay where you catch the ferry to Hornby Island. Just follow the
signs and the traffic.
From Gravelly Bay, another ten-minute ferry ride brings you to Hornby Island.
From the ferry you will find yourself on Shingle Spit Road which soon veers right and becomes Central Road (the main road around the island). Travel on Central Road until you come to Carmichael Road on your left, less than 1 minute past the Cardboard House Bakery. Turn left onto Carmichael then almost immediately turn right onto Cowie Road. Go to the end of Cowie to Gunpowder Trail and turn left toward the ocean. The first street you come to, also on your left, will be Cannon Crescent. Galleon Beach Getaway wraps around the corner of Cannon Crescent and Gunpowder Trail. The Blue Door cottage driveway is at 3225 Cannon Crescent. The Ravens Call cottage driveway is at 3210 Gunpowder Trail. Both driveways are clearly marked. At the foot of Gunpowder Trail, two very short blocks away, you will see Grassy Point and Galleon Beach.

The last ferry from Denman Island to Hornby departs daily at 6:35 pm, except Fridays there is a later sailing at 10:35 pm. This means that you need to catch the 6 pm ferry (10 pm on Fridays) from Buckley Bay to Denman Island in order to be on the last ferry to Hornby Island. Take this into account when making your travel plans.
